Rice flakes are prepared from paddy. It is consumed as a food item by immersing it in plain water or milk, with salt and sugar to taste, or lightly fried in oil with nuts, raisins, cardamoms, and other spices. Rice flakes are rich in nutritients like carbohydrates and proteins. Being a cheap and convenient food, it is consumed by all peoples,irrespective of their ages. The thicknesses of these flakes vary between thin to nearly four times thicker than a normal rice grain. It can be easily digestable and act as a good breakfast for all age peoples.

Indian Recipe:Aval Upma

Recipe Ingredients for Aval Upma:

• Aval/poha – 2 cups
• Green chilli – 3 nos
• Onions – 2 no.
• Capsicum(cubed) – 2 tblsp
• Oil – 1 tsp
• Peanuts – 3 tblsp
• Coriander leaves – few
• Mustard seeds – 1/2 tsp
• Lemon juice – 1 tsp
• Turmeric powder – a pinch
• Red chilli – 1 no.
• Salt -as needed

Cooking Method:

1. Wash the poha in water and soak it in the water for a minute.
2. Drain the water completely.
3. Cut the onions and chillies into fine pieces.
4. In a kadai, add a little oil and saute the capsicum for 5 mins and keep it aside.
5. Add oil to this kadai and throw in the mustard seeds.
6. Add the green chilies,red chili and onions .
7. Saute till the onion turns pink. Add salt to this.
8. Add the peanuts at this stage.
9. Saute for few mins and add turmeric powder then mix well .
10.Now add the poha and keep in a slow flame.
11.Throw in the capsicum and mix well.
12.Garnish with coriander.
